The Power of a Family Giving Meeting
"It brings your family closer together. It really does."
Now great grandparents, Jim and Susan Wright are watching their investment in family generosity bear fruit across generations.
“We wanted to make sure our children understood generosity,” Jim told us, “and our commitment to the Lord’s kingdom.” The Wrights modeled generosity for their children and read books about generosity together as a family.
12 years ago, Jim and Susan introduced something new: a family-wide giving meeting, held between Thanksgiving and Christmas each year. The meeting is organized around a matching challenge. Each child and grandchild chooses a charity, and Jim and Susan will match their donation, provided the charity fits three requirements.
“It must be Christian. It must be effective. It must be efficient.”
All the family members have learned how to find and understand a nonprofit’s 990 form. These financial disclosures help demonstrate to the Wrights that a chosen organization stewards its money well and accomplishes its mission effectively. Together, the family discusses and votes on whether to support each of the selected charities.
As the Wright family has grown, their annual giving meeting keeps them united around the joy of giving.
Susan told us, “At first … they kinda looked at us like, ‘What are you talking about?’ But now they understand, and we all just really enjoy doing this … The blessings just grow and grow.”
